Grounded: Ping Yeung School of Art
16 site-specific artworks were created and scattered in the campus of 20,000 sq.m Ping Yeung Public School that was abandoned in the year 2007. The abandoned campus is located at Ping Che (an area in north of Fanling, New Territories, Hong Kong in close proximity to the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen), within the farmlands and villages. Unlike usual Hong Kong’s school, each detached buildings served as a classroom, organically formed to blend with the landscape.

Established in 1950s, students and teachers who lived in Ping Che and studied here constructed their own school and the expansion of the campus, forming a close tie to the school and the environment. Artists re-enacted the alumni’s practice through ‘grounded’ practices of art-making. Methodology behind each artworks creation were diverse and multifaceted – some appropriated rural craftsmenship, some were dialogical and participatory work created through interactions with alumni and residents nearby, some have actively reflected on notion of nature and the land – and the collections revived the campus as “School of Art”

This exhibition, “Grounded: Ping Yeung School of Art” reflects on the direction of contemporary art setting outside the white box, urban-rural relationship and alternative models of community development, with Echigo-Tsumari art field Triennale in Japan as one of our learning reference.
